Fire Protection Engineer

Fire Protection Engineer - Alexandria, VA OR Fort Worth, TX

Role Description: Our office has a great full-time opportunity for a Fire Protection Engineer.  This role works with multi-disciplinary design teams in the completion of studies, development of plans and specifications for a broad range of projects. The successful candidate will lead full-service fire protection design and consulting projects and support multi-discipline public and private sector clients.  

Location: Alexandria, Virginia or Fort Worth, Texas
Reports to: Vice President/Principal-in-Charge
Employment Type: 40 FT Hours

Registration(s): Licensed Fire Protection Engineer
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering (BSFPE) from an ABET Accredited Program

Duties:
  • Evaluate fire protection and alarm systems on existing facilities.
  • Develop fire protection system requirements to include, but not limited to fire pumps, tanks, distribution systems, hydrants, and sprinkler systems.
  • Perform fire protection engineering design functions on a variety of large public and private developments.
  • Direct junior engineers as necessary.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers and other clients.
  • Maintain currency on development in codes and standards within the Fire Protection industry.
Key Responsibilities: 
  • Prepares and follows comprehensive Project Framework Instructions and proper work planning for a project. Ensures proper staff is assigned and utilized on their projects.
  • Reviews  project reports and performance metrics to track project progress and budget. Leads successful projects (profit, on-schedule, quality, satisfied client). 
  • Contributes to successful delivery and performance of projects
  • Cultivates relationships with clients and holds strong relationships with clients
  • Takes active steps in the pursuit of winning new business or additional  opportunities with existing clients and may be responsible for a stated portion of office sales goal. Assists and/or leads team in pursuit of new work (repeat work, SOQ and Proposals).  Develops and/or executes project Win strategy.
  • Understands and follows QMS and Quality initiatives. Ensures quality control  measures are being adhered to on projects and daily operations.  
  • Actively engages and participates in the training, coaching, and mentoring of junior staff 
  • Understands duties and responsibilities, possesses necessary job knowledge and technical skills, maintains job knowledge current.

Qualifications:
  • Licensed Fire Protection Professional Engineer.  
  • B.S. Degree in Fire Protection Engineering from an ABET Accredited Program.
  • Minimum10 years’ experience with fire codes and in designing fire protection systems.
  • Experience designing fire protection equipment, alarms, and suppression systems for commercial and industrial facilities. 
  • Experience with building and fire safety code analysis, fire dynamic analysis, and fire risk analysis is required.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA standards. Experience with DoD UFC criteria a plus.
  • Working knowledge of applicable computer-aided design programs (Revit, Autosprink for Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Experience in developing contract documents for a wide variety of fire alarm and suppression systems (including special suppression systems).
  • Specialization in fire sprinkler systems and other water-based systems design.
  • Experience leading or growing a team is a plus

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds on occasion
  • The employee must be able to concentrate on details, work under deadline pressures, apply sound logic and judgment, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities
